Significant Oversight for Upcoming Elections
In an unprecedented move, a special commission has accredited a total of 3,006 observers tasked with overseeing the various stages of the legislative elections scheduled for September 23, 2026, in Morocco. This initiative is supported by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), alongside numerous Moroccan associations and international organizations. The decision was reached during two meetings held on September 4 and 7 at the CNDH headquarters in Rabat, led by Amina Bouayach. The meetings included representatives from 26 non-governmental organizations and one national institution, in addition to 30 international entities.
The accredited observers include 783 individuals associated with the CNDH and 2,023 from Moroccan NGOs. Their primary role will be to ensure an independent and neutral observation of the electoral process, adhering to the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks. Additionally, nearly 200 observers from 20 international and regional organizations will also participate, alongside representatives from ten accredited diplomatic missions in Morocco. These observers hail from diverse regions, including Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and will begin attending informational sessions on the legal framework governing the elections as of September 20, before being deployed across the twelve regions of the country.
Moreover, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe dispatched a preliminary mission from August 31 to September 2 to monitor the electoral preparations. This mission engaged with government departments, national institutions, civil society representatives, media, and diplomatic corps to assess the readiness for the upcoming elections. As part of the preparation process, the CNDH has organized training sessions for 1,313 observers across 33 centers in 23 cities, covering all twelve regions of Morocco.
