PAM Leads the Legislative Elections with Significant Gains

The recent legislative elections in Morocco have concluded with the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emerging as the clear winner, securing a total of 97 parliamentary seats. This result was officially announced by the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, during a press conference held on Friday. Following PAM, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and the Istiqlal Party achieved 66 and 65 seats respectively, thereby solidifying their positions in the political landscape. The Istiqlal Party has maintained its previous standing from the 2021 elections, reinforcing its electoral weight. Consequently, this trio of parties forms the current majority coalition and celebrated their success jubilantly at their headquarters in Rabat.

Surprising Turn of Events for PJD

In a surprising twist, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has made a remarkable comeback, securing 54 seats, a significant increase from the mere 13 seats they obtained in the last elections. This unexpected resurgence has caught many observers off guard, especially considering the party's leadership under Abdelilah Benkirane. Meanwhile, the RNI was unable to replicate its triumph from 2021, allowing PAM to take the lead in a closely contested campaign.

Voter turnout for this election was notably lower compared to previous years, with only 38% of registered Moroccan voters participating, down from 52.3% in 2021. However, notable engagement was observed in the southern provinces, reflecting the strong commitment of the Saharan populations to the democratic process.
