Peruvian Avocado Imports Surge in Spain: A Market Transformation

Significant Growth in Peruvian Avocado Imports

Recent statistics released by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, in collaboration with DataComex, reveal a remarkable surge in avocado imports from Peru, which reached an impressive 169,596 tonnes in 2025. This represents a substantial 23.38% increase compared to the previous year and underscores the growing dominance of Latin American avocado sources in the Spanish market. In stark contrast, imports from Morocco, the second-largest supplier of avocados, totaled only 39,159 tonnes, further emphasizing Peru's significant lead in this sector.

The upward trajectory of Peruvian avocado imports is not merely a fleeting trend. Over the past six years, this figure has skyrocketed from just over 54,000 tonnes in 2019 to nearly 170,000 tonnes in 2025, indicating a robust and sustained growth pattern. This influx is reshaping the landscape of avocado consumption in Spain, particularly as the country continues to establish itself as the leading avocado producer within the European Union. The expansion of cultivated avocado areas, especially in Andalusia, has been noteworthy, with key regions such as La Axarquía and the Costa Tropical leading the charge. Additionally, emerging areas like Cádiz, Huelva, and the Valencian Community are also contributing to this growth, with national production climbing from around 50,000 tonnes in the 1990s to over 110,000 tonnes in recent years.

Challenges Amidst Domestic Growth

Despite these advancements in domestic avocado cultivation, Spain is experiencing a decline in its market share within Europe. The increasing presence of third-country suppliers, who benefit from lower production costs and reduced regulatory hurdles, is intensifying the competition and exerting pressure on farm-gate prices. Morocco, in particular, has captured attention within the sector due to its rapid expansion, with exports surpassing 140,000 tonnes. However, the growth of Peru, while less publicized, is equally impactful and warrants attention.

A critical factor contributing to the rise of Peruvian avocados is their strategic production calendar. Peruvian exports peak between April and October, especially from May to September, coinciding with the latter phase of the Spanish avocado season. In Spain, the harvesting period runs from October to June, with the most significant production occurring between November and March. This overlapping timeline compels Spanish growers to adjust their harvest schedules to avoid direct competition with the influx of competitively priced South American avocados. The increase of over 32,000 tonnes in Peruvian imports in 2025 serves as a testament to the evolving dynamics of the avocado market, indicating a shift that is reshaping both the Spanish and broader European Union markets. As domestic production continues to rise, the pressure from imports is prompting the sector to adapt to an increasingly globalized environment where timing, costs, and logistics play a pivotal role in determining success.
