Petition to Abolish Daylight Saving Time Surpasses 70,000 Signatures

Petition Against Daylight Saving Time Gains Momentum

In a significant movement, activists have launched an online petition that has garnered over 70,000 signatures, calling upon the Moroccan government to reconsider its adoption of what they describe as an "unlawful daylight saving time." The petitioners argue that this time shift presents daily challenges to citizens, adversely affecting their everyday lives.

The petition, hosted on the platform "Change," asserts that the sudden change in time leads to ongoing disruptions in individuals' biological clocks. This disruption negatively impacts academic performance, professional efficiency, and even mental and physical health. The document highlights that students' concentration and information retention are compromised due to the effects of this additional hour, which in turn deteriorates the quality of education. Furthermore, the unnatural alteration of one’s biological rhythm is linked to various health issues, ranging from insomnia to severe psychological and physical disorders. The petition notes that such frequent changes can harm family dynamics and disrupt the social stability of the entire community.

Since its inception, the initiative titled "We Want to Return to Standard Time" has witnessed robust support among Moroccans, with a considerable majority expressing their disapproval of daylight saving time, particularly in light of numerous studies indicating its detrimental effects on various aspects of life.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform announced a temporary return to the "legal time" of the kingdom (Greenwich Mean Time) during Ramadan, with the intention of reverting to daylight saving time at 2:00 AM on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
