PJD Nominates Fatri in Northern Fez Following Recent Resignation
In a surprising move amidst internal tensions, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) is preparing to endorse Ahmed Fatri for candidacy in Northern Fez, shortly after his resignation as the leader of the Unity and Democracy Party. This decision comes on the heels of Fatri’s recent attempts to merge his party with PJD, which ultimately did not materialize.
Ahmed Fatri, the former secretary-general of the "Snbour" Party, submitted his resignation earlier this week, effective immediately. In his resignation letter addressed to the Minister of Interior, Abdelwahid Lafiti, he stated that this was a definitive decision, informing the political bureau of his step and empowering them to manage the party’s affairs until the national conference is convened.
This unexpected resignation has sparked significant discussion within political and media circles, especially given the current context of both organizational and electoral challenges. Fatri had engaged in consultations with various parties to integrate his former party into a larger political framework, a strategy aimed at revitalizing and rescuing the organization from its deep financial crisis, which included debts exceeding 115,000 dirhams.
In his communication to the political bureau, Fatri highlighted that the financial difficulties, exacerbated by the cessation of public funding, prevented the party from meeting the legal requirements for future support or even organizing its national conference under favorable conditions. The crisis extended beyond financial issues and affected the party's internal structure, fostering tensions and eroding trust among its members, complicating the organizational landscape further.
In light of these developments, Fatri proposed a practical framework for integration during his discussions with PJD's secretary-general, Abdelilah Benkirane. This proposal included allowing candidates from the Unity and Democracy Party to run in the upcoming elections under the PJD banner, with assurances that PJD would cover the election campaign expenses and resolve outstanding debts of the Unity and Democracy Party.
