Political Controversy Unfolds at Independence Party Meeting

The recent session of the National Council of the Independence Party was marked by an unusual incident when the party's secretary-general, Nizar Baraka, made an unexpected verbal slip during a political statement that stirred considerable debate before he hastily sought to rectify it in front of the attendees. Baraka stated that he had received information suggesting that the National Council of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) had voted against the participation of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) in the government. This revelation caused a stir among the audience, who began to applaud, considering the political sensitivity and the nature of the current governmental alliances.

However, just a few minutes later, Baraka publicly retracted this statement, clarifying that the information was entirely inaccurate and unfounded. Known for his poise and balanced rhetoric in the Moroccan political arena, Baraka was delivering a generally strong and measured speech, except for this momentary lapse which stemmed from erroneous data provided to him at the venue.

In his clarification, Baraka indicated that the source of this error was the party's Inspector General, Mustafa Hnine, who had conveyed the information without verifying its accuracy and credibility. Baraka further elaborated that the misinformation circulated was indeed incorrect, attributing the mistake to Hnine's oversight. This incident has opened the floodgates for extensive criticism within the party's circles, especially as Hnine, a retired figure facing various health issues, has raised questions among many observers and party leaders regarding his continued presence in such a critical role that demands precise tracking of political news and data. There are calls for a refreshing of leadership within the party's Inspectorate to avoid such embarrassing blunders in the future.

At nearly 80 years old, Hnine serves as Baraka's chief of staff at the Ministry of Equipment and is also the Inspector of the Independence Party. He previously held the position of chief of staff under Abbas El Fassi when he was the Prime Minister. A number of party members have expressed frustration with what they describe as Baraka's black box, particularly in light of the significant errors, especially today's major mistake.
