Political Tensions Rise as Progressive Socialist Party Suspends Member

Political Discipline Enforced in the Progressive Socialist Party

The Progressive Socialist Party has taken a significant step by suspending the membership of Mohamed Khattab, who serves as the deputy mayor of the city of Fez and is also a member of the party's central committee. This decision reflects the party's tightening grip on organizational discipline as political elections approach, prompted by Khattab's alleged involvement in activities that support a candidate from a rival party.

This decision emerged following a meeting of the party's political bureau, which dedicated a portion of its discussions to examining a report concerning the organizational status of the regional branch in Fez. According to the statement released by the party, the report included details related to practices attributed to Khattab that were deemed inconsistent with the party's organizational principles and internal regulations.

Allegations of Political Misconduct

Reports indicate that the backdrop for this decision stems from Khattab's participation in meetings and political activities that endorsed Aziz Labbar, a candidate from the Authenticity and Modernity Party in the southern district of Fez. Labbar is also a member of the governing council of the Fez municipality, an association that the leadership of the Progressive Socialist Party interpreted as a breach of party discipline and political commitment.

The political bureau's decision is closely tied to Khattab's organizational standing within the party, given his roles as a central committee member and an elected representative on the municipal council. The party emphasized that these responsibilities necessitate a higher level of adherence to the ethics of membership and respect for the party's institutional decisions, which is essential for maintaining organizational cohesion and credibility.

Moreover, the party did not limit its actions to merely suspending Khattab’s membership; it has also hinted at the possibility of resorting to legal and judicial processes as permitted by the organizational laws concerning political parties, should developments in the case warrant such measures. This indicates that the matter could extend beyond internal organizational issues if any justification for further action is found.

In this context, the political bureau has decided to inform the National Political Monitoring and Arbitration Committee, along with various relevant party bodies and organizations, about the suspension decision to arrange for the corresponding organizational consequences in line with the party's internal procedures.

This development occurs during a politically charged period marked by increasing party activism and the reorganization of positions in preparation for upcoming electoral challenges, prompting parties to adopt stricter measures in monitoring the compliance of their elected representatives and structures to the rules of discipline, in order to avoid any messages that could be perceived as leniency towards deviations from the official positions of the organization.
