Press Conference Highlights Urgency for Imprisoned Moroccan Freethinker’s Medical Care

Press Conference Calls for Urgent Action on Ibtissame Lachgar's Medical Condition

In a significant press conference held recently in Rabat, the family and legal representatives of Ibtissame “Betty” Lachgar, a Moroccan freethinker currently imprisoned, raised alarming concerns regarding her deteriorating health. During the event, her sister, Siham Lachgar, alongside attorney Ghizlane Mamouni, spoke about the dire medical circumstances surrounding Lachgar, who is in urgent need of specialized care that can only be administered in France. Lachgar, a clinical psychologist, atheist, feminist, and human rights advocate, has been enduring the repercussions of a significant medical condition since 1996, having survived humeral osteosarcoma. Her situation has worsened since her incarceration ten months ago, leading to severe pain resulting from a loosened total humeral prosthesis that lacks proper surgical attention in prison.

Dr. Neil C. Vining, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon affiliated with WakeMed Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, provided an urgent assessment of Lachgar's condition. He highlighted the extreme risks she faces, including potential infection, sepsis, amputation, or even death, if she does not receive immediate treatment. Dr. Vining's findings confirm that a total humeral megaprosthesis is essential for her recovery, emphasizing the necessity of a specialized orthopedic oncology center for the procedure. Unfortunately, the medical solutions proposed by local physicians, which may involve amputation, starkly contrast with the treatment originally planned in Paris, aiming to preserve her limb. Mamouni reiterated the consensus among healthcare professionals: without swift and adequate care, Lachgar's health is at an irreversible risk.

International Appeal for Humanitarian Intervention

During the press conference, the representatives also discussed findings from the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, which shed light on the discrepancies between Lachgar's treatment and international detention standards. Following her conviction in early September for a social media post perceived as blasphemous, Amnesty International has labeled her detention as arbitrary, while Human Rights Watch has called for the annulment of her sentence, placing her case under the scrutiny of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Siham Lachgar and her legal team have urged Moroccan authorities to act compassionately, appealing for international support from diplomatic missions and U.N. entities to escalate the matter and ensure immediate medical assistance. The Free Betty Coalition, which consists of numerous organizations and boasts over 385,000 supporters of an Avaaz petition, is actively advocating for Lachgar's urgent medical needs. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) has recognized Lachgar as the recipient of the 2026 Avijit Roy Courage Award, further amplifying calls for her release and medical care. Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of FFRF, emphasized the crucial role of public awareness in securing Lachgar's freedom, stating, “Morocco will only free Betty and ensure her health and life can be saved if public outcry makes it too uncomfortable to keep her imprisoned.”

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a prominent U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to maintaining the separation of state and church while promoting awareness of non-theistic matters. With approximately 41,000 members, it stands as North America's largest association of freethinkers. To learn more about their initiatives or to support their mission, please visit ffrf.org.
