Public Outcry Over Corruption at Marrakech's New Bus Station
On Sunday, the local coalition against corruption in Marrakech organized a protest in front of the new bus station located in the Al-Azouzia neighborhood. The demonstration was held under the banner "The Al-Azouzia Bus Station Represents Corruption and Waste of Public Funds, with Those Involved Unpunished." The protesters raised slogans condemning corruption and the misappropriation of public funds, demanding an expedited judicial investigation that has been underway by the regional judicial police in Marrakech for some time. They called for the prosecution of those implicated in this case.
The new bus station project has incurred a staggering cost of 12 billion dirhams, and it is a pivotal element of the Marrakech Renewed City Program, which has allocated a budget of 600 billion and 300 million dirhams. In a Facebook post, the President of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds highlighted that "the bus station is just one example among many that showcase the corruption of a select group of elected officials and responsible parties in this city." He added that this elite has "exploited power and influence to waste public property under the pretext of investment." The protest reflects a growing concern among citizens regarding transparency and accountability in government projects, urging authorities to take decisive action against corruption.
