Rabat 2026: A Vision for Literary Inclusion and Cultural Influence

Rabat's Cultural Ambitions as World Book Capital 2026

On April 14, 2026, Rabat officially unveiled its roadmap to becoming the "World Book Capital 2026" during a press conference held at the National Institute of Music and Choreographic Art (INSMAC). This significant event, held under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, represents a pivotal moment in the execution of a large-scale cultural initiative developed in partnership with UNESCO. The Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication elaborated on the project’s details, which aim to reposition Rabat as a regional hub for literature and intellectual creativity. Central to this strategy is a pronounced commitment to democratizing access to reading and ensuring that books become an integral part of citizens' daily lives.

The program for 2026 comprises an impressive lineup of 340 activities organized around three primary pillars: cultural animation, training, and professional encounters. Moving beyond conventional venues, the organizers plan to utilize a variety of public spaces—such as parks, tram stations, and healthcare facilities—to reach a broader and more diverse audience, particularly targeting youth and those traditionally distanced from cultural offerings.

The International Book Fair: A Central Component of the Year

Complementing this annual program, the 31st edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) is set to be a landmark event. This prestigious gathering serves as a showcase for the publishing ecosystem and will significantly enhance the visibility of Rabat's aspirations within the framework of this UNESCO designation. The organizers have outlined key aspects of this edition, including international participation, thematic programming, and professional meetings aimed at fostering dialogue among publishers, authors, and cultural stakeholders from various backgrounds.

This initiative also relies on a broad institutional mobilization, engaging the Wilaya of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region and the Municipality of Rabat. On the media front, over 73 partners have been enlisted to ensure comprehensive coverage and promotion of the various events. With this launch, Rabat embarks on a year dedicated to books, with dual objectives: to enhance the cultural appeal of the capital and to leverage reading as a tool for social inclusion and education.
