Rabat Court Upholds Five-Year Sentence for Mohamed Ziane

Rabat Court's Decision on Mohamed Ziane's Case

The Rabat Court of Appeal has confirmed a five-year prison sentence for lawyer Mohamed Ziane, who was convicted of embezzling and unlawfully appropriating funds from the Moroccan Liberal Party. The ruling, which was delivered in the early hours of Wednesday, upholds the original sentence handed down in the first instance against the former bar association president.

Initially, Ziane's sentence was reduced to three years on appeal, prompting him to take the case to the Court of Cassation, which subsequently returned the matter to the appellate court. Ultimately, the appellate court aligned itself with the initial decision, reaffirming the five-year sentence.

In this same case, the appellate court also upheld the conviction of a second defendant, Rachid Bouroua, who received a five-year sentence. Meanwhile, a third defendant, Miloud Chtat, was sentenced to two years in prison, with one year to be served without parole.

Ziane has already served three years in a separate case since 2022, following a complaint filed by the Ministry of Interior that included eleven charges against him. Among these charges were accusations of insulting public officials through statements and threats aimed at undermining their honor and authority, as well as attempting to influence judicial decisions through public declarations.
