Rabat Marks a Milestone in Cancer Care with the Best of MASCC Conference

This conference stands out as the first of its kind on the African continent, dedicated to sharing the latest advancements in supportive cancer care.
The gathering attracted healthcare professionals involved in cancer patient care, offering them a comprehensive synthesis of key studies presented at the MASCC's annual congress held in Melbourne earlier that June. Renowned experts, both domestic and international, presented some of the year's most impactful research findings. The morning session focused on advocacy and the disparities in access to supportive care, along with evidence-based integrative oncology practices. Meanwhile, the afternoon was dedicated to managing the toxicities associated with new cancer therapies, notably addressing issues such as cardiotoxicity, psychosocial interventions, tailored physical activity, and support for caregivers.
The conference kicked off with remarks from Dr. Rachid Bekkali, who outlined the vision of the Lalla Salma Foundation regarding supportive care and highlighted the advocacy efforts by MOASCC for the recognition of supportive care as a cornerstone of excellence in cancer management within Morocco. Dr. Mounir Bachouchi, the president of MOASCC, emphasized the critical importance of embedding supportive care in the holistic treatment of cancer patients. He remarked, "Recent therapeutic advancements have significantly altered the prognosis for our patients; however, the focus has shifted. It's no longer merely about treating the disease but rather about supporting individuals who are living longer with their conditions and the side effects of our treatments." He further articulated that supportive care is not an adjunct to oncology care but is essential for enhancing the quality of treatment, preserving patient tolerance, ensuring adherence to therapy, minimizing avoidable hospitalizations, and maintaining quality of life and autonomy.
