Rabat Hosts an International Workshop on Energy and Climate Change
On September 24 and 25, 2026, Rabat will host an important international workshop focusing on energy, the environment, climate change, and the green transition. This event is organized by AIRESS in collaboration with ECOMOD, bringing together researchers and economists experts in energy, environmental, and climate policies, particularly concerning emerging economies, Africa, and the MENA region. The workshop aims to foster discussions that will aid in shaping effective policies and strategies for a sustainable future.
Notable participants include Ali Bayar, President of ECOMOD; Dorothée Boccanfuso, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Governance, Economics, and Social Sciences at UM6P; and Abdelkhalek Touhami, Director of the Doctoral Program in Economics at the same faculty. The workshop will also feature contributions from several international researchers, such as Alice Albonico, Guido Ascari, Alexandre Carrier, Qazi Haque, Kostas Mavromatis, and Andra Smadu, who will share their insights on various topics related to the green transition.
Focus on Morocco's Decarbonization Challenges
A significant portion of the workshop will delve into the specific challenges facing Morocco in the context of decarbonization. Karim Mohamed from Mohammed V University will present an analysis of industrialization, carbon taxation, and energy efficiency in Morocco. Other Moroccan researchers, including Said Ait Faraji, Nabil El Baouchari, and Rachid El Mataoui, will focus on carbon pricing, green investment, and the transformation of the transportation sector. They aim to explore how these aspects can be optimized to align with global sustainability goals.
Furthermore, researchers like Oussama Neffatti, Salaheddine Aouffou, Achraf Firady, and Mohamed El Attouga will investigate decarbonization pathways specifically for Morocco. Abdellah Bouhria will examine the impacts of weather shocks on economic activity, while Abdallahi H’moide, Radouane Raouf, and Yassine El Hajoui will analyze the repercussions of climate change on North African agriculture. The workshop will also gather experts to discuss the effects of the carbon border adjustment mechanism on the Moroccan economy, including insights from Ghassane Benmir, Touhami Abdelkhalek, and Dorothée Boccanfuso.
