Eight Individuals Arrested in Illegal Abortion Case
On September 6, 2026, the judicial police in Rabat apprehended eight individuals, including a gynecologist, his secretary, an anesthetist, and three women believed to be involved in clandestine abortion practices. The arrests were made during a police operation that caught the suspects in the act of performing illegal abortions within a medical facility. Following the apprehension, the gynecologist was taken into custody, while the other seven individuals were granted provisional release upon paying bail, with amounts ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 dirhams.
The gynecologist was presented before the public prosecutor in a state of arrest, as reported by Al Akhbar on September 8. After being interrogated, the magistrate decided to forward the case to an investigating judge due to the serious nature of the charges against the gynecologist, specifically the illegal practice of abortions. Consequently, he was placed in pre-trial detention at Al Arjat prison, while the others faced charges of complicity in these illegal activities.
Details of the Investigation and Evidence Collected
Both the anesthetist and the medical secretary were released after posting bail of 2,000 dirhams, while two companions of the patients, who were present during the procedures, were required to pay 10,000 dirhams each. The three women who underwent the abortions were also granted provisional release after paying 5,000 dirhams each. The investigation, which commenced the previous Friday under the supervision of the appropriate prosecutor's office, aimed to uncover the full extent of criminal activities associated with the gynecologist, his secretary, and the other defendants. Initial findings revealed that the medical practitioner and his assistant were caught red-handed while performing abortions on three women in their clinic.
Searches conducted at the homes of the gynecologist and his secretary led to the seizure of two jackets bearing biological traces linked to the illegal procedures, along with a significant quantity of medications, pharmaceutical products, and cash believed to be proceeds from these illicit operations. Al Akhbar reported that all suspects are undergoing thorough judicial investigations, led by the prosecutor's office, to uncover the details surrounding this case, including potential connections to other criminal activities.
Following the investigation, the judicial police presented the gynecologist, his secretary, the anesthetist, and the other defendants to the public prosecutor at the Rabat Court of First Instance, where the investigating judge confirmed the gynecologist's pre-trial detention and decided to pursue the other co-defendants under provisional release, contingent upon their bail payments.
