Rabat Set to Unveil Exciting Activities as World Book Capital 2026

Rabat to Launch Year-Long Cultural Initiatives on April 24

On April 14, 2026, it was officially announced that Rabat, designated as the "World Book Capital 2026," will kick off an extensive series of cultural activities starting on April 24. The city is set to host an impressive total of 342 diverse events aimed at fostering a deeper connection between the public and the world of literature. Commissioner General of the "Rabat, World Book Capital" program, Latifa Mouftakir, shared that the initiative is designed to create an inclusive cultural environment where engagement with literary works serves as a key driver for human development.

The planned activities are strategically organized around twelve key themes, encompassing open reading events, literary cafes, awareness campaigns highlighting the significance of reading in communal spaces, exhibitions, mobile libraries, literary residencies, as well as conferences tailored for book professionals. Additionally, training courses and practical workshops will be offered to enrich the experience of participants. Mouftakir emphasized that Rabat's selection as World Book Capital is a result of a meticulous evaluation of its historical and cultural significance, showcasing its longstanding relationship with books and knowledge dissemination.

The city’s rich literary heritage is evident in its mosques and libraries, which stand as testaments to a vibrant cultural tradition that has evolved over centuries. Modern institutions, including universities and cultural centers, alongside a robust network of associations, contribute to this legacy. Furthermore, the events aim to break the traditional boundaries of literature by making it accessible in unconventional settings such as hospitals, correctional facilities, orphanages, youth centers, and everyday public spaces like bus stations, plazas, and parks.

Rabat's recognition as the World Book Capital follows the legacy of Rio de Janeiro, which held the title in 2025. UNESCO has acknowledged the Moroccan capital's pivotal role as a cultural epicenter for knowledge exchange and the arts, highlighting its burgeoning local book industry that significantly supports educational advancement. With 54 publishing houses and an increasing number of libraries, Rabat is poised to play a crucial role in promoting literacy and cultural engagement among its citizens.
