Rabat: World Book Capital 2026 - A Year to Democratize Reading

Rabat Prepares to Celebrate Literature in 2026

Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is gearing up to embark on an inspiring journey as it has been designated as the World Book Capital for 2026 by UNESCO. This prestigious title will officially kick off on April 24, 2026, with a comprehensive program aimed at promoting literature and reading across diverse communities. The highlight of this year's events will be the 31st edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL), taking place from May 1 to May 10, 2026, under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI.

The Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication has curated an extensive agenda featuring 342 activities spread across twelve thematic axes. This initiative seeks to bring books to unexpected places where they are often overlooked, such as hospitals, reform centers, orphanages, public transport, and open spaces. With over 54 publishing houses and a growing network of bookstores, Rabat aims to showcase its vibrant yet lesser-known publishing ecosystem to an international audience.

Highlights of the International Book Fair

The SIEL serves as a prominent platform for this dynamic literary endeavor, boasting impressive participation figures: 890 exhibitors from 60 countries, more than 130,000 titles showcased, and around 204 events that will feature 720 authors and intellectuals. This year's guest of honor will be France, further enriching the cultural exchange. Additionally, the fair will pay tribute to Ibn Battuta, the renowned 14th-century Moroccan traveler, placing travel literature at the forefront of discussions and activities.

Rabat follows in the footsteps of Rio de Janeiro (2025) and Strasbourg (2024) in the succession of World Book Capitals, a tradition that began with Madrid in 2001. The title, conferred by UNESCO’s General Directorate based on the recommendations of a committee comprising publishers, booksellers, librarians, and authors, commits the winning city to advocate for reading among all demographics throughout the year. Morocco is determined to exceed expectations and extend the impact of this initiative well beyond the official calendar.
