Unprecedented Growth in Moroccan Air Travel
The Moroccan airport network has achieved unprecedented levels during the summer season of 2026, according to data released by the Airports of Morocco (ONDA). Several national airports have shattered historical records during peak travel times, indicating that the rise in air traffic has transitioned from a seasonal phenomenon to a structural trend. In fact, the total air traffic surpassed 36.3 million passengers throughout the entire year of 2025.
During the first weekend of August, Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport registered an absolute record, accommodating 46,439 passengers within a single 24-hour period. This marks the highest daily traffic ever recorded at this airport. Other airports followed suit: Marrakech Menara surpassed 30,000 passengers in one day, while Rabat-Salé Airport welcomed 9,226 passengers, Agadir Al Massira received 11,973 passengers, and Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport recorded 13,309 passengers during peak days.
Significant Growth in Secondary Airports
The most significant indicators come from secondary airports, with Dakhla and Tetouan experiencing the highest growth rates during this period, reaching 45.2% and 36.14% respectively. This trend reflects that the aviation dynamics in the kingdom are no longer limited to traditional hubs such as Casablanca, Marrakech, and Agadir, but are gradually encompassing various regions across the nation.
According to ONDA, this dynamic growth is attributed to the increasing attractiveness of Morocco and the strengthening of its international air connectivity. The ability to accommodate the continuous rise in passenger numbers while maintaining operational performance quality is a key aspect of the ongoing transformation program. This initiative is part of the 'Airports 2030' strategy, which includes expanding capacity, modernizing infrastructure, digitizing services, and enhancing passenger pathways.
Managing peak periods also relies on the cooperation of various stakeholders within the airport ecosystem, including the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the General Directorate of National Security, Customs Administration, Royal Gendarmerie, Royal Air Maroc, alongside ONDA. The company aims to continue enhancing the network's capacity and accelerating air connectivity – initiatives that will be crucial in determining Morocco's ability to accommodate the expected influx of visitors during the 2030 World Cup.
