As the school year approaches, the bustling streets of Rabat's historic medina are experiencing a significant increase in commercial activity. With summer vacations coming to an end, residents from Rabat are flocking to the main shopping arteries to purchase clothing and school supplies, a trend that brings immense joy to local merchants. This vibrant atmosphere is particularly noticeable in key commercial areas such as El Gza, Souïqa, Souk Sebbate, and the Rue des Consuls, where a substantial portion of the trading activity is concentrated.

Merchants interviewed by Le360 express their satisfaction with the revival of business that typically accompanies the back-to-school season. This period traditionally marks a peak time for local shops, as demand for school supplies, clothing, and other related items increases. However, some shop owners have voiced concerns regarding noise disturbances caused by concerts held in August as part of the Rab’Africa Festival, particularly due to the proximity of the Oudayas stage to the old city.

The medina of Rabat, a vital commercial and cultural center of the capital, has evolved through various historical periods. Its origins can be traced back to the Almohad era, yet its urban fabric has been profoundly influenced since the 17th century by the arrival of Hornacheros and Andalusian populations. Enclosed by the Andalusian walls and connected to the Kasbah of the Oudayas, it retains a dense network of shopping streets, alleyways, and dead ends, with Souïqa and Rue des Consuls serving as two of its historically significant commercial axes.

The medina is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Rabat, modern capital and historic city: a shared heritage," which has been recognized since 2012.
