Concerns Over Aggressive Rhetoric from Morocco
In a recent discussion on the program 'Al Rojo Vivo,' journalist Ignacio Cembrero has shed light on the alarming uptick in hostile rhetoric directed at Spain from Moroccan social media and press outlets. Cembrero pointed out that in recent days, there has been a notable surge in violent messages, some of which even call for the forcible entry into Ceuta. He emphasized that this is not just a phenomenon limited to social media trolls allegedly working for Moroccan authorities, but also prevalent in the Moroccan press where there is a clear, aggressive narrative against Spain, particularly targeting political parties like the Popular Party and various NGOs.
One particularly concerning example he cited involves messages circulating on social media that frame the entry into Ceuta as a golden opportunity, with one message explicitly stating, 'This would be our chance to enter Ceuta. This time, we will attack Ceuta.' This inflammatory rhetoric raises serious concerns about the potential for real-world consequences stemming from such hostility.
Distraction from Migration Crisis?
Cembrero also referenced recent allegations of mistreatment and violence against immigrants in Ceuta, suggesting that the hostile discourse might serve as a tactic to divert attention from the ongoing migration crisis. Specifically, he noted that this kind of narrative could be a strategic move to shift focus away from the tragic deaths that have occurred in the waters near Ceuta and the Moroccan province of Tétouan, where over 140 fatalities have been reported. He postulated that this could be an attempt to ensure Moroccan citizens do not dwell on these dire circumstances.
While Cembrero acknowledged the need for a scapegoat in this discourse, he clarified that he does not believe it constitutes a direct campaign against the Spanish government. Rather, he described the current Spanish administration as one that is largely accommodating to Moroccan authorities, citing recent comments made by the Minister of Environment as an example of this dynamic. The situation remains complex and requires careful consideration as it unfolds.
