Royal Air Maroc may be temporarily barred from operating in Nigeria due to allegations of repeated violations of passenger rights, particularly concerning delayed luggage and claims handling. This warning was issued by Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). He expressed concerns that previous sanctions have not sufficiently prompted Royal Air Maroc to enhance its operational practices.
According to Achimugu, the airline has been slow in notifying travelers about the delayed arrival of their luggage, has failed to provide necessary assistance consistently, and has allowed complaints to languish until regulatory intervention was required. This level of service has raised serious concerns about the airline's commitment to customer care and compliance with Nigerian regulations.
Furthermore, Achimugu has accused Ahmed Boussouf, the head of Royal Air Maroc in Nigeria, of failing to attend crucial meetings in Abuja. Instead of sending a representative with the authority to address issues or make commitments, the company has reportedly dispatched individuals without the power to resolve matters effectively. In a recent confrontation, Boussouf allegedly told Achimugu, "Do what you want," which was reported by Punch. As of now, Royal Air Maroc has not publicly responded to these claims.
The consumer protection department plans to recommend the suspension of the airline's operations until it commits to adhering to Nigerian regulations and improving its treatment of passengers. This situation comes after Royal Air Maroc was previously penalized in December 2024, along with four Nigerian airlines, for violations of consumer protection rules, which it settled in September 2025. The regulator has indicated that this time, it will impose stricter penalties.
