Royal Air Maroc Suspends International Routes Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Royal Air Maroc Temporarily Halts Several International Flights

In a significant operational adjustment, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has announced the temporary suspension of numerous international routes across Central Africa and Europe. This decision is primarily a response to the soaring prices of kerosene, which have surged due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The airline has assured that these routes will be reinstated as soon as the economic conditions allow.

In their official statement, RAM highlighted that the extraordinary increase in fuel prices is impacting the entire global aviation industry, necessitating a temporary restructuring of its flight network. The airline cited a "substantial rise in kerosene prices," which directly correlates with the geopolitical instability in the Middle East, resulting in a sharp escalation of operational costs. RAM's aim is to maintain economic balance by avoiding chronically unprofitable routes amidst these elevated costs. It is important to note that this is a temporary network adjustment rather than a permanent cancellation, with the airline pledging to reassess the situation regularly based on fuel prices and passenger demand.

Suspended Routes to Africa and Europe

As part of this operational shift, Royal Air Maroc is temporarily suspending several routes from its hub in Casablanca to various capitals in Central Africa. Notable destinations affected include Bangui, Brazzaville, Kinshasa, Douala, Yaoundé, and Libreville, which are among the first routes to experience this network adjustment. Additionally, the airline is freezing several medium-haul flights originating from Tanger and Marrakech, including popular routes such as Tanger–Malaga, Tanger–Barcelona, Marrakech–Lyon, Marrakech–Bordeaux, Marrakech–Marseille, and Marrakech–Brussels. These suspensions are particularly focused on routes where demand has diminished, making it difficult to sustain operations profitably given the rising fuel costs.

To mitigate the impact on customers affected by these suspensions, RAM has committed to implementing necessary measures to accommodate those impacted and minimize inconvenience. Passengers will be offered alternative solutions, including re-routing or refunds, depending on individual circumstances. RAM has stated that it is closely monitoring international developments and will work to gradually restore these routes as soon as operational and economic conditions permit.
