A Summer Tradition at the Libramont Fair
Every July, Samuel Simon, a resident of Marrakech, returns to his hometown of Libramont to oversee the operations of parking lot number 13 during the annual fair. This tradition has been a significant part of his life for around twenty years, where he not only manages the parking but also reconnects with his roots and the local community. On a recent Saturday, the parking lot was already full by 9:45 AM, showcasing the popularity and rapid filling of spaces compared to previous years. Simon's management of this officially recognized private parking area ensures that visitors have a convenient place to leave their vehicles while they enjoy the fair, with a standard fee of €8 applied across all official parking lots.
"Managing this parking lot has been a part of my life for two decades," Simon shares. "I come back every summer because this fair has been a cornerstone of my life since childhood. It’s also a welcome retreat from the intense heat of Morocco. Here, I can experience the fair in a different light, and I still manage to visit the fairgrounds one day over the weekend." Each morning, the team begins their duties at 7:30 AM; comprising Simon, a student at the entrance, and two attendants directing vehicles, they can accommodate around 150 cars. Once the lot is filled, Simon remains on-site until about 4 PM, despite having a system in place for visitors to contact him if issues arise.
Challenges and Memorable Moments
This year, Simon faced a new challenge regarding payment methods, as many visitors preferred to pay by card, yet the parking lot lacks a payment terminal. Reflecting on past experiences, Simon recalls the disastrous weather of 2023, when unexpected floods forced the team to improvise and use a tractor to rescue stuck vehicles. "That was truly a defining moment for me at this fair," he remembers with a mix of frustration and nostalgia. The current dry conditions have prompted the local government to implement new safety measures, including mandatory fire extinguishers, highlighting the importance of preparedness in managing such a large event.
Despite occasional complaints from motorists, the atmosphere remains largely positive and friendly. "There are very few unhappy customers—perhaps one in every hundred. With the beautiful weather this year, everyone is in high spirits, and we often see familiar faces returning to our parking lot," Simon notes with a smile. Each summer, he takes a break from his work in Marrakech to reconnect with family and friends in Libramont, affirming that this fair and the local ambiance are irreplaceable treasures in his life.
