Strategic Economic Ties with Morocco
The administration of Pedro Sánchez is determined to strengthen its economic ties with Morocco, despite widespread discontent among the Spanish populace following the illegal entry of approximately 80,000 immigrants into Ceuta. According to reports from OKDIARIO, the government is working in collaboration with the Icex to organize a large-scale business event in Rabat aimed at attracting numerous Spanish companies before the end of this year. This initiative is intended to foster strategic alliances with the neighboring country, signaling a shift in Spain's economic approach towards Morocco amidst a backdrop of political controversy.
Recent sources from the public enterprise have indicated to this publication that the Sánchez administration has recently canceled another planned event that was to focus on opportunities arising from the upcoming World Cup. Instead, they are prioritizing a more extensive gathering in the Moroccan capital. The previously announced event titled 'World Cup 2030: Opportunities for Spanish Companies in Morocco 2026' had encouraged companies to explore the investment, contracting, and project opportunities associated with the World Cup, which is set to take place in Morocco.
Macro Event with FIFA and Key Stakeholders
What is now envisioned as a segment of the larger gathering in Morocco included a roundtable discussion with representatives from FIFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and the Moroccan Football Federation, alongside high-ranking Spanish and Moroccan officials, including the First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business, Carlos Cuerpo. This significant event is scheduled for the first week of December. Initially, a related event was set to take place on November 10 and 11 in Morocco, with ticket prices starting at 450 euros per person.
Currently, the invitation encompasses a broad range of sectors, including construction, civil engineering, telecommunications, smart cities, and tourism-related services. The Sánchez government aims to encourage these Spanish companies to invest in Morocco's critical infrastructure needs, which are being framed as 'challenges and opportunities' for the entities involved. Notably, they are emphasizing the vast business opportunities linked to telecommunications networks, connectivity solutions, and smart city technologies that need addressing in Morocco before the World Cup 2030.
It is noteworthy that the Sánchez administration is advocating for Spanish investment in the construction, expansion, and modernization of Moroccan stadiums and sports infrastructures, ensuring that these facilities are prepared in time for the international sporting event.
