São Tomé and Príncipe Affirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan
In a significant diplomatic move, São Tomé and Príncipe has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan concerning the Western Sahara, characterizing it as “the only credible and realistic solution” to the long-standing regional dispute. This endorsement was articulated by Foreign Minister Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz during a joint press conference held in Rabat alongside Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Minister Amado Vaz emphasized that Morocco’s proposal is not only serious but also credible and durable, offering a pathway to a political resolution in the region.
Moreover, she highlighted the increasing global consensus surrounding this autonomy initiative, which is gaining traction as a sustainable framework for resolving the Western Sahara issue. In her remarks, she unequivocally affirmed São Tomé and Príncipe’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity, which explicitly encompasses the Sahara region. The minister commended the recent surge in diplomatic efforts led by King Mohammed VI, noting that international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan is expanding significantly. She also referenced the pivotal UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which positions the autonomy proposal as the only credible avenue for achieving a lasting resolution to the conflict.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Economic Cooperation
In addition to discussing the Western Sahara situation, the two ministers deliberated on enhancing bilateral cooperation between their nations. They reviewed the progress of the 2025-2027 roadmap, which was signed in Rabat the previous year, identifying both achievements and areas requiring further attention. To ensure effective implementation and outcomes, they agreed to establish mechanisms for monitoring the roadmap. Economic collaboration was another focal point of their discussions, with both sides expressing a commitment to intensifying exchanges between the public and private sectors, thereby fostering a mutually beneficial strategic partnership. Minister Amado Vaz is scheduled to meet with Moroccan business leaders to explore investment opportunities and strengthen trade relations.
Furthermore, the ministers announced their intention to hold a joint commission meeting next year in Laayoune, which will serve as a vital platform for advancing various bilateral projects. Emphasizing the strength of their nations' ties, Amado Vaz described the relationship as one rooted in friendship, solidarity, and shared developmental aspirations. She also underscored the significance of South-South cooperation and Africa-led initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability, and economic growth across the continent. This meeting represents a continuation of the strengthening relations between Morocco and São Tomé and Príncipe, particularly following the establishment of a consulate by the latter in Laayoune in 2020. Both countries aim to position their partnership as a model of African cooperation founded on mutual respect and shared interests.
