US Military Announces Search for Missing Soldiers in Morocco
In a troubling development, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reported the disappearance of two American soldiers following participation in the multinational military exercise known as African Lion, held in the southwestern region of Morocco. The military command indicated that a comprehensive search and rescue operation is currently underway, involving all troops that were part of the exercise. The soldiers went missing on May 2, 2023, near the training area of Cap Draa, close to Tan Tan, which borders the Atlantic Ocean. The ongoing exercise began in April and is scheduled to conclude at the end of the month, with the Moroccan military confirming that the soldiers were lost near a rocky cliff.
Initial reports suggest that the soldiers may have fallen into the ocean, although an American defense official emphasized that there is no indication of any terrorist activity related to the incident. The African Lion exercises are recognized as the largest annual military training operations conducted by the US military in Africa, aimed at enhancing cooperation and operational readiness among NATO allies and partner nations on the continent. This year's maneuvers, which commenced on April 27 and will last until May 8, involve about 5,000 troops from over 40 different countries, with most activities taking place in Morocco, alongside training in Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.
US military officials have reiterated the significance of these multinational exercises, highlighting their role in bolstering regional security cooperation and improving readiness to address global crises. As the search continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of the personnel involved and understanding the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
