Strengthening Cooperation Between France and Morocco
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is currently on an official visit to Rabat, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, with the primary objective of enhancing the diplomatic and cooperative ties between France and Morocco. This high-level meeting is a significant milestone in the ongoing relationship between the two nations and is expected to yield several agreements that will pave the way for a new phase in their partnership.
A Renewed Commitment Since 2024
Accompanied by a delegation of twelve ministers, including Jean-Noël Barrot and Laurent Nuñez, Lecornu is set to engage in discussions with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch. This meeting marks the first high-level governmental exchange since 2019 and will focus on various areas of cooperation including economic, security, migration, and defense sectors, with multiple agreements anticipated to be signed as a result of these discussions.
The relationship between France and Morocco has notably strengthened since France acknowledged Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2024. Following President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Morocco a few months later, the bilateral partnership was revitalized after a period of tension. Currently, France regards Morocco as a strategic partner in the Maghreb region, especially in light of its delicate relations with Algeria.
This visit may also lay the groundwork for a forthcoming trip to France by King Mohammed VI, as both countries are working towards finalizing a treaty that formalizes an "exceptional" Franco-Moroccan partnership, which was initially announced in the spring but has yet to be concluded.
