Seller Faces Justice for Tourist Fraud in Marrakech
A nut and dried fruit seller at the famous Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakech has been sentenced to ten months in prison after demanding 200 dirhams, approximately 18 euros, from a foreign tourist for just 50 grams of products. The court in Marrakech found the trader guilty of fraud, a decision that has sparked considerable public outrage.
The case came to light following the circulation of a video on social media showing the seller soliciting the exorbitant price for a minuscule quantity of dried fruit and nuts. This footage led to widespread indignation, particularly concerning the stark disparity between the price charged and the quantity offered, which was merely around 50 grams. The viral nature of the video prompted local authorities to take action.
In response to the incident, the trader's selling spot at the renowned Djemaa el Fna square was shut down, prohibiting him from continuing his operations there. Shortly thereafter, he was apprehended by the police. The public prosecutor's office decided to detain him on fraud charges while he awaited trial. Ultimately, the court imposed an unconditional ten-month prison sentence on the seller.
