Senegal Stripped of Africa Cup Title Amid Controversy

Senegal Loses Africa Cup Title Following Controversial Match Ruling

The African Football Confederation (CAF) has made the unprecedented decision to revoke Senegal's title, awarding it instead to Morocco, following a scandalous final that took place in January. The match, which saw Senegal initially triumph over Morocco with a score of 1-0 after extra time, has now been officially recorded as a 3-0 victory for Morocco due to Senegal's abrupt exit from the field in protest of a controversial penalty decision during the match. This significant ruling came from the CAF's appeals court, which has determined that Senegal's departure constituted a forfeit.

The tumultuous final, held on January 18, had been surrounded by protests and uproar, leading Senegal to contest their defeat. The CAF's disciplinary committee validated Senegal's appeal, contrasting with the initial ruling that had merely imposed fines without altering the match's outcome. Senegal's coach, Pape Thiaw, faced a five-match suspension and a hefty fine of $100,000 for instructing his players to leave the pitch in response to the disputed penalty call.

In its ruling, the appeals court referenced Article 82 of the Africa Cup regulations, concluding that Senegal's exit from the game constituted a forfeiture, thus designating them as the losers. Initially, the CAF had noted that Senegal returned to the field, suggesting that the criteria for forfeiture were not met. However, the controversial late penalty awarded to Morocco turned the tide of the match, leading to Senegal's players nearly unanimously leaving the pitch in protest. Although Brahim Diaz missed the penalty upon the game’s resumption, Pape Gueye ultimately scored the winning goal for Senegal in extra time, making the eventual ruling even more contentious.
