Shellfish Harvesting Prohibition in Tétouan
The Moroccan Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries has officially announced a ban on the harvesting and sale of shellfish from the Targha-Chmala designated shellfish area, located within the Tétouan/Chefchaouen region. This prohibition will remain in effect until the waters are fully purified. The decision stems from alarming results from analyses conducted by the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH), which revealed significant bacterial contamination levels in the shellfish, exceeding the acceptable norms.
In light of these findings, consumers are advised to purchase only pre-packaged shellfish products that bear proper health identification labels and are sold in authorized retail outlets, such as official markets. The Secretary of State emphasizes that bulk or street-sold shellfish do not guarantee safety and pose a serious risk to public health.
