SIEL 2026: A Platform for Cultural Dialogue

The National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) showcased its commitment to cultural engagement at the International Book Fair (SIEL) held in Rabat on May 2, 2026. The CNDH pavilion was bustling with intellectual activities, featuring the presentation of academic works, poetry readings, and discussions focused on cultural rights. This event reaffirmed the CNDH's role as a vital forum for dialogue, connecting civil society, international experts, and the literary world. The afternoon session kicked off with a compelling debate centered on the publication "Mossalaha." Dr. Ahmed Abbadi, President of the Mossalaha Center and Secretary-General of the Rabita Mohammadia of Scholars, participated in this discussion, which addressed contemporary religious thought and the role of mediation in reinforcing citizenship values. Dr. Abbadi emphasized the need for intellectual reform in Morocco, highlighting how the publication aids readers in reconciling with those who may have strayed towards extremism.

Artistic Expression and Cultural Rights

The literary segment of the fair featured a poignant poetry reading from "Zad Nass," written by poet Mohammed Salem Errai, moderated by critic Ismail Hamouni. This interaction allowed attendees to immerse themselves in the aesthetic and social themes presented by the author, illustrating the significance of literary creativity in expressing individual and collective freedoms. The day's events culminated in a high-level international conference that tackled the advocacy for the right to development amidst contemporary global tensions, emphasizing the contributions of cultural rights. Led by Khalid Ramli, Director of International Cooperation at the CNDH, the conference enlisted insights from experts, including Min-Jae Lee from the UN Human Rights Office. Lee stressed the interconnected nature of the right to development and cultural rights, providing pathways for national stakeholders in Morocco to enhance their implementation of these rights. The speakers collectively underlined the necessity of integrating cultural rights as a crucial mechanism for achieving social justice and sustainable development on both regional and global scales.
