Significant Decline in Morocco's Coastal Fish Catches: A 2026 Overview

Overview of Fishing Volumes and Economic Impact

As of late February 2026, Morocco has witnessed a notable decline in the volume of coastal and traditional fishery products, with total landings amounting to 55,153 tons. This figure represents an 18% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. Interestingly, despite the drop in volume, the overall value of these products increased slightly by 3%, indicating a relative improvement in the market prices of certain marine products. This paradox highlights the complexities within the fishing industry, where volume and value do not always move in tandem.

Significant Trends in Local Ports

Recent reports from the National Fisheries Office, citing Moroccan media, have drawn attention to the Alhucemas port, where significant declines in landings from coastal and traditional fishing were noted by the end of February 2026. The total catch recorded at this port was approximately 550 tons, which marks a staggering 32% drop compared to the same timeframe last year. The commercial value of these catches also faced a substantial setback, decreasing by 35%. In terms of specific species, surface fish saw a dramatic decline of 39%, while white fish experienced a modest recovery of 5%. Mollusks, which constitute the majority of landings at ports, declined by 35%, contrasting with crustaceans, which surged by 69%. These developments underscore the volatility of maritime activities in the region and the challenges facing local fishermen.
