Significant Economic Contribution of Three Regions in Morocco for 2024

Three Regions Dominate Morocco's National Wealth in 2024

The High Commission for Planning has disclosed that the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima collectively accounted for a substantial portion of Morocco's national wealth in the year 2024, contributing a remarkable 58.4% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This concentration of wealth is primarily attributed to the industrial, commercial, and service dynamics thriving in these regions, alongside their robust infrastructural frameworks.

According to the official report detailing the regional accounts for 2024, the Casablanca-Settat region alone contributed 32.3% to the national GDP, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra with 15.5%, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima at 10.7%. This data underscores a significant economic disparity, where a mere five regions together contributed 33.8% of the national GDP, albeit with less dominance compared to the top three regions. These regions include Marrakech-Safi (8.7%), Fez-Meknes (8.2%), Souss-Massa (6.6%), Beni Mellal-Khenifra (5.3%), and the Eastern region (5.1%).

Conversely, the regions of Drâa-Tafilalet, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab made a combined contribution of only 7.8% to the national GDP value. The High Commission further noted that five regions dominated nearly three-quarters (74.4%) of household final consumption expenditures. Notably, Casablanca-Settat accounted for 25.3% of these expenditures nationally, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra at 14.8%, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima at 11.6%, Fez-Meknes at 11.4%, and Marrakech-Safi at 11.3%. In total, household final consumption expenditures reached 944.1 billion dirhams across Morocco in 2024.

The report also highlighted that the remaining regions collectively contributed approximately 25.6% to household final consumption expenditures, with shares ranging from 0.8% for Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab to 7.2% for Souss-Massa. On a more positive note, two-thirds of Morocco's regions achieved GDP growth rates exceeding the national average of 4.4% in 2024. The regions that outperformed include Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra with a growth rate of 7.6%, Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab at 7%, Souss-Massa with 6.8%, Drâa-Tafilalet at 6.2%, the Eastern region at 5.9%, Marrakech-Safi at 5.1%, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima at 4.9%, and Guelmim-Oued Noun at 4.6%.

Overall, the Moroccan economy experienced a growth of 4.4% in 2024, with the GDP amounting to 1,550.45 billion dirhams in volume terms. In current prices, the GDP reached 1,614.57 billion dirhams, reflecting an impressive increase of 8.7% compared to 2023.
