Significant Fuel Price Surge in Morocco: Gasoline and Diesel Reach New Highs

Morocco Faces Record Fuel Price Increases

In a concerning development for Moroccan consumers, fuel prices have surged dramatically, marking the third increase since the start of the current year. As of March 16, 2026, diesel prices have risen by approximately two dirhams per liter, now standing at 12.80 dirhams, while gasoline has seen an increase of 1.44 dirhams, reaching 13.93 dirhams per liter. This escalation is attributed to the ongoing fluctuations in global oil prices, which have seen a sharp increase of over 40% following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East at the end of February.

Impact of Global Oil Prices on Local Markets

The recent hike in fuel prices has caught many by surprise, especially given the relatively modest increases observed earlier this year—35 centimes in early February and 25 centimes in early March. Fuel distribution companies in Morocco have implemented these new prices amid a backdrop of international tension that has significantly affected oil supply chains. Notably, the price of diesel is being offered at varying rates by different fuel stations; for instance, "Yom" station sells diesel at 12.77 dirhams per liter, while "Total Energies" offers it at 12.78 dirhams. In contrast, the lowest prices for gasoline can be found at "Total Energies" at 13.91 dirhams per liter, with prices at other stations such as "Shell" and "Petromin" closely following.

This situation raises concerns regarding the economic impact on consumers and businesses alike, as rising fuel costs can lead to increased transportation expenses and subsequently drive up the cost of goods and services across the board. As the Moroccan economy grapples with these challenges, consumers are advised to stay informed about the ongoing changes in the fuel market and consider the implications for their daily expenses.
