Morocco's Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Market Sees Remarkable Growth

In a noteworthy development, the Moroccan automotive market has experienced a significant increase in the sales of electric and hybrid vehicles during the first nine months of 2026. A total of 29,522 vehicles from these categories were registered, reflecting an impressive growth rate of 74.4% compared to the same period last year. According to data from the Moroccan Association of Automobile Importers (AIVAM), the share of vehicles equipped with electric or hybrid engines has risen to 17.8% of total private car sales, up from 11.4% during the same timeframe in 2025, marking a substantial increase of 6.4 percentage points.

The statistics reveal that this transformation in consumer preferences is primarily driven by hybrid vehicles, which combine traditional fuel engines with electric power. Traditional hybrid car sales reached 11,821 units, while plug-in hybrid vehicles saw sales of 9,438 units, registering a remarkable growth of 120.3%. Additionally, light hybrid vehicle sales totaled 4,849 units, whereas fully electric vehicles remain relatively limited in their market presence, with only 1,497 units sold in the first nine months of the year.

Conversely, electric vehicles equipped with range-extending engines have emerged as a notable category, recording 1,917 sales. This indicates the initial adoption of new technologies within the Moroccan market, particularly as the presence of Chinese automotive brands expands. The surge in electric and hybrid vehicle sales coincides with a decline in the market share of diesel-powered vehicles, which accounted for 63.5% of private car sales from January to the end of September 2026, down from around 71% during the same period last year.

Data from September further underscores the acceleration of this shift, with electric and hybrid vehicles making up 20.7% of private car sales for that month, compared to 15% in September 2025. Meanwhile, the share of diesel vehicles dipped to 59.6%. This advancement occurs within the context of growth in the new car market in Morocco, which recorded sales of 188,495 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, reflecting a 13% increase compared to the same period last year.

Despite this positive trend, the figures indicate that the transition towards fully electric vehicles is still in its nascent stages, with the majority of the growth attributed to hybrid vehicles of various types, while diesel vehicles continue to dominate the Moroccan automotive landscape.
