Surge of Migrants Return to Morocco
According to official sources from Spain, thousands of migrants have voluntarily returned from Ceuta, a Spanish enclave, to Morocco throughout the past month. Specifically, Spanish Regional Policy Minister Ángel Víctor Torres announced that 5,321 individuals have made this return since August 10. In addition to this, Torres indicated that around 100 people have withdrawn their asylum applications in Spain, while nearly 1,000 more are currently being registered to complete their return procedures.
These remarks coincided with the initiation of a transfer operation that saw over 860 migrants moved to a temporary reception center established in the Los Rosales neighborhood of Ceuta. This development comes in the wake of a significant wave of migration that occurred on July 30 and 31, during which thousands attempted to reach the city, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 83 lives as they tried to swim to safety.
In the aftermath of this mass crossing, many migrants returned to Morocco within hours, yet a few thousand have remained in Ceuta, which has led to rising tensions in the city. Protests have erupted against the management approach taken by the Madrid government in handling this crisis, signaling ongoing challenges in addressing the complex issues surrounding migration in the region.
