Spain Requests EU Support for Migration Challenges in Ceuta
In a notable plea for assistance, Spain has reached out to the European Union for help in managing the ongoing migration crisis in its North African exclave of Ceuta. The Spanish Interior Ministry in Madrid has formally requested that Frontex, the EU's border agency, alongside the EU asylum agency, step in to expedite the registration of migrants and the processing of asylum applications. This request follows a significant influx of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta at the end of July, with tens of thousands crossing the border. Although many migrants returned shortly after their arrival, approximately 5,000 individuals remain in the exclave. The situation has recently escalated, leading to demonstrations by local residents against the presence of migrants, which resulted in clashes with law enforcement officials. The intervention of Frontex is seen as a crucial step in addressing the challenges posed by this migration crisis.
