Strategic Meeting in Nouakchott: Mauritania's President and Senior Moroccan Official Discuss Regional Security

Strengthening Borders Amid Regional Instability

On April 7, 2026, Mauritania's President, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, welcomed General Mohammed Berrid, the Inspector General of the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces, in Nouakchott. This significant meeting coincided with the fifth session of the mixed military commission between Morocco and Mauritania, underscoring the strategic importance of their collaboration in the face of increasing instability in the Sahel region.

For a duration of 72 hours, high-ranking military officials from both nations engaged in discussions focused on reviewing the past year and fortifying border surveillance. A key objective of this initiative is to enhance intelligence sharing to combat terrorism and other security threats emerging near Mali. Both Morocco and Mauritania are keen on ensuring their borders are effectively monitored to prevent the spillover of violence and unrest from neighboring countries.

Maintaining a Delicate Balance Between Neighbors

President Ghazouani's position is particularly delicate, as he must navigate the complexities of maintaining a balanced relationship between Morocco and Algeria. While agreements are being formalized with Rabat, ongoing discussions with Algeria are also crucial. Notably, in April 2025, Mauritania and Algeria solidified contracts aimed at protecting sensitive information, highlighting the importance of diplomacy in regional security matters.

Another point of contention arises from the Polisario Front, which seeks self-determination for Western Sahara. The Mauritanian president occasionally meets with representatives from this group, a move that has irked Morocco, which asserts its sovereignty over the territory. Despite these tensions, Ghazouani remains committed to engaging in dialogue with all parties involved, emphasizing his administration's intent to foster communication and understanding in a divided landscape.
