Ghana's Commitment to Trade Expansion with Morocco
In a significant move to bolster economic relations, Madam Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry of Ghana, embarked on a three-day official visit to Morocco aimed at enhancing trade relations and fostering investment opportunities between the two nations. This pivotal visit commenced on May 3, 2026, and included productive bilateral discussions with key Moroccan officials, notably Mr. Karim Zidane, the Minister of Investments, Convergence and Public Policy, and Mr. Omar Hejira, the Minister of Foreign Trade.
During her meetings, Madam Ofosu-Adjare expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated Ghana's unwavering commitment to fortifying economic partnerships with Morocco, particularly focusing on the automobile and agro-processing sectors. She praised Morocco's advancements under the African Continental Free Trade Area, emphasizing the necessity of eliminating non-tariff barriers to facilitate smoother trade flows between the two countries.
Promoting Investment and Cooperation
The Minister outlined Ghana's ambitious 24-Hour Economy policy, which is designed to stimulate industrial growth and attract foreign investments. Furthermore, she highlighted the amendments made under the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre law, which aims to create a favorable environment for international investors seeking opportunities in Ghana. Mr. Zidane acknowledged the historical significance of King Mohammed VI's visit to Ghana in 2017, which he described as a pivotal moment in the evolution of bilateral relations. He stressed the importance of increasing Ghanaian exports as a means to address existing trade imbalances.
To further accelerate collaboration, he proposed organizing a Business and Investment Forum in Ghana, which would serve as a platform to strengthen partnerships between both nations. In a related discussion, Mr. Hejira regarded Ghana as a strategic trading ally and noted that the visit provided a prime opportunity to deepen trade cooperation. He showcased Morocco's robust economic performance across various sectors, including renewable energy, port infrastructure, finance, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive and aviation industries.
Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to organizing the proposed Business and Investment Forum, aimed at enhancing business-to-business interactions. The visit culminated in a formal ceremony hosted by Morocco's Minister of Foreign Trade, further solidifying the collaborative spirit between the two countries. Madam Ofosu-Adjare was joined by Mrs. Charity Gbedawo, Ghana’s Ambassador to Morocco, alongside officials from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.
