Strengthening Franco-Moroccan Relations
On the evening of July 15, 2026, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu arrived in Rabat, welcomed by his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, in a visit aimed at deepening ties between France and Morocco. Accompanied by a delegation of twelve ministers, including Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, Lecornu received military honors at the airport, marking the significance of this diplomatic mission.
Lecornu's arrival followed a trip to Qatar, where he conveyed France's condolences following the death of the former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. This visit underlines the escalating cooperation between Morocco and France, particularly after President Emmanuel Macron recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara in the summer of 2024, a move that stirred tensions with Algeria.
Future Collaborations and Agreements
The relationship between France and Morocco has since flourished, highlighted by Macron's grand reception in Rabat in October 2024, which concluded with numerous contracts and the establishment of an "exceptional enhanced partnership." As part of this ongoing collaboration, King Mohammed VI of Morocco expressed his commitment to consolidating the "privileged relations" between the two nations in a message to Macron during the French national holiday on July 14. This partnership may pave the way for a future visit by the Moroccan monarch to France, though the date remains to be determined.
During their meeting, Lecornu and Akhannouch plan to visit the royal mausoleum and engage in bilateral talks where each minister will meet their counterpart. They are set to preside over a high-level meeting between their delegations, the first since 2019, which is expected to result in the signing of approximately fifteen agreements across various sectors including the economy, security, migration, and defense. These agreements are anticipated to cover topics such as civil aviation, the establishment of a regional express rail line in Rabat, partnerships in water management, and an electricity interconnection project between the two nations. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding potential defense collaborations focused on armament.
