Strengthening Ties: French Prime Minister's Visit to Morocco

Strengthening Bilateral Relations: French PM's Visit to Morocco

In a significant diplomatic move, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will embark on a two-day visit to Morocco, commencing on Wednesday. This visit aims to reinforce the longstanding ties between Paris and Rabat while also paving the way for a potential visit by Morocco's King Mohammed VI to France. Lecornu will be accompanied by a delegation of 12 ministers, including notable figures such as Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, indicating the importance of this diplomatic engagement.

During his stay, Prime Minister Lecornu is scheduled to meet with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in what will be a High-Level Meeting between the two nations, marking the first such gathering since 2019. This meeting holds particular significance as relations between France and Morocco have notably improved since French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in the summer of 2024. This acknowledgment set the stage for Macron's state visit to Rabat in October 2024, which concluded a period of diplomatic strains characterized by espionage allegations and visa disputes. That visit culminated in the signing of various bilateral agreements, heralding a new chapter in Franco-Moroccan relations.

Wednesday will also mark Lecornu's inaugural foreign visit since he took office in the autumn of 2025. The itinerary for the visit includes an official military welcome, followed by a ceremonial laying of wreaths at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V on Thursday morning. Subsequently, bilateral talks are planned, where multiple agreements are expected to be finalized at Morocco's Foreign Ministry. This engagement exemplifies the commitment of both nations to foster collaboration and strengthen their diplomatic and economic ties.
