Rabat's Mayor Fatiha El Moudni Visits Mexico City to Foster Collaboration
On April 26, 2023, the Congress of Mexico City welcomed Fatiha El Moudni, the Mayor of Rabat, Morocco, at the Donceles Legislative Venue. The primary aim of her visit was to enhance the bonds of friendship and collaboration between the two cities and to initiate a continuous dialogue and shared projects. In his welcoming address, Deputy Jesús Sesma Suárez emphasized that this meeting not only honors the local legislative authority but also signifies a significant rapprochement between the communities of Mexico City and Rabat.
"Today, we are not merely gathered for a courtesy visit; we are here to build bridges, strengthen friendships, and open avenues for collaboration between our cities," stated the president of the local Congress. He expressed hope that this visit marks the beginning of a close relationship characterized by ongoing dialogue and shared initiatives that would benefit both communities. "I am confident that the cooperation between our sister cities will always yield positive outcomes and leave a lasting impact. Despite the geographical distance, we share common values, aspirations, and a commitment to serve our people," he asserted.
Opportunities for Mutual Growth and Development
Mayor Fatiha El Moudni expressed her honor in visiting the capital's Congress and agreed on the many common interests shared between Mexico and Morocco, especially in the social domain. During her address to the legislators from various political parties present in the "Heberto Castillo" hall, she highlighted that this meeting would lead to a commitment to collaborative work that generates solutions and fosters the development of both cities.
Congresswoman Yolanda García Ortega from the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) celebrated El Moudni's visit, noting it symbolizes mutual support among people from different backgrounds, which helps to create balance and strengthen institutional ties. Congresswoman Luisa Fernanda Ledesma Alpízar pointed out that both Mexico City and Rabat face similar challenges and strive for modernization. She acknowledged the efforts of the Mayor of Rabat, emphasizing the additional barriers faced by women in political positions.
Furthermore, Congresswoman Tania Larios Pérez, Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), reminded attendees of previous meetings with the Moroccan government, highlighting the favorable conditions for strengthening ties. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Diana Sánchez Barrios remarked that in a world rife with serious conflicts, this visit represents a political act of peace that prioritizes dialogue, understanding, and cooperation.
The Coordinator of the Parliamentary Association for Feminist and Inclusive Trade (APMCFI) noted that such exchanges would allow for the creation of common agendas aimed at promoting social justice and building cities where no one is left behind. During the visit, Sandra Toribio, responsible for the visiting area of the capital's Congress, provided Mayor El Moudni with a historical overview of the Donceles Legislative Venue, which was inaugurated on April 1, 1911, by then-President Porfirio Díaz. She explained that this building served as the Chamber of Deputies from 1911 to 1982, later transitioning to the Assembly of Representatives of the Federal District (ARDF), which eventually became the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District (ALDF) and has been known as the Congress of Mexico City since 2018.
