Celebrating Animal Welfare with the GOAT Eid Trail Run
On a vibrant Sunday in Tamraght, located near Agadir, a remarkable event brought together runners, animal enthusiasts, and families for a charity trail run that uniquely featured two goats, aimed at supporting animal rescue initiatives throughout Morocco. The event, aptly named the "GOAT Eid Trail Run," invited participants to embrace the spirit of community and fitness with the mantra "Run with goats, for goats," aligning perfectly with the celebrations of the Eid Al Adha holiday.
The trail run encompassed a 5-kilometer course, welcoming individuals of all fitness levels, followed by a children's race and a soothing yoga session on the picturesque Tamraght beach. Organizers announced that all proceeds from ticket sales would directly contribute to feeding rescued animals across Morocco, underscoring the event's commitment to animal welfare.
Inspiring Community Engagement Through Animal Companionship
At the heart of this inspiring event were Kiki and Kai, two goats belonging to the GOAT Run Club Marrakech, who have captured public attention by participating in various sporting activities across the nation. Kai, notably, made history as the first goat to finish a half-marathon, successfully completing the Marrakech Semi-Marathon in both 2025 and 2026. Rosanna Dawes, the founder of the GOAT Run Club, shared insights about the club's inception, stating that the idea blossomed from the enthusiastic responses she received while running alongside Kai at public events. "I started running with goats a couple of years ago, and I participated in the half marathon with Kai in Marrakech twice," Dawes recounted. "The positive atmosphere we experienced during those events inspired me to create the club, fostering a community that embraces outdoor activities and animal companionship."
The Eid-themed event served to highlight the significant role that goats and sheep play during this religious holiday, while simultaneously raising funds for animal welfare causes. Dawes articulated her vision, saying, "For this Eid, we wanted to create something special, as goats and sheep hold immense importance during this time. We aimed to give back to animals as the Eid festivities came to a close, with the funds raised directly supporting rescue animals throughout Morocco." She emphasized that the event was not meant to critique the traditions surrounding Eid Al Adha, but rather to celebrate animals and provide a platform for people to express their appreciation for them.
The event culminated in a group yoga session against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic coast, offering participants a chance to relax and connect with the goats after the run. Kiki and Kai, having previously participated in challenging trail races in the Atlas Mountains, such as the High Atlas Ultra Trail and the Wawgant Toubkal Trail, further showcased their impressive capabilities, making this event a fitting tribute to their adventurous spirit.
