Taza City to Build New Wastewater Treatment Plant

The city of Taza is set to significantly upgrade its wastewater infrastructure by constructing a new sewage treatment plant, with an investment totaling approximately 353.57 million dirhams. This ambitious project is spearheaded by the regional multi-service company, Fes-Meknes, which aims to enhance the treatment capacities and improve the quality of discharged water, facilitating the potential for reusing a portion of the treated water.

This initiative is part of Taza's broader liquid sanitation program and is comprised of two main components as outlined in the tender launched by the regional company. The first phase involves the design and construction of the plant, while the second focuses on its operation and maintenance for a period of five years. This dual-phase approach ensures that the plant operates continuously and adheres to established technical and environmental standards.

The new plant will implement a low-load activated sludge technology, with a treatment capacity of up to 20,198 cubic meters of wastewater per day. Additionally, the project includes the establishment of a tertiary treatment unit capable of processing 2,000 cubic meters daily, aimed at enhancing the quality of treated water and making it suitable for reuse in specific areas.

The tertiary treatment component is particularly crucial, as it plays a significant role in valuing treated wastewater by converting it into a reusable water resource. This aligns with the growing focus on water resource conservation and the search for alternative sources amid increasing water stress.

The new facility is expected to greatly improve the liquid sanitation system in Taza, mitigating the environmental impact of wastewater on the natural surroundings. Moreover, it will address the city's evolving urban and demographic needs while enhancing its capacity to manage wastewater in a more efficient and sustainable manner.
