The Rapid Progress of the TGV Kénitra-Marrakech Project
As of April 2026, one year after the commencement of the TGV Kénitra-Marrakech construction, the National Office of Railways (ONCF) has reported significant advancements in this monumental project, which is valued at an impressive 96 billion dirhams. This historic initiative, launched under the auspices of King Mohammed VI, aims to profoundly transform Morocco's national railway network. A substantial portion of the budget, amounting to 53 billion dirhams, is earmarked specifically for the infrastructure of this new high-speed line. Concurrently, the ONCF is investing 29 billion dirhams for the acquisition of 168 trains intended to renew the existing fleet, along with an additional 14 billion dirhams for the maintenance of current railway lines. On the ground, the new 430-kilometer railway, construction of which began on April 24, 2025, is experiencing notable advancement. The land required for the project has been fully cleared, and nearly 20 million cubic meters of earth have already been excavated and filled. Work on the 15 viaducts and three covered trenches is actively progressing, alongside a massive supply of materials that includes thousands of tons of rails, sleepers, and ballast. The architectural designs for the passenger stations have been finalized, with construction expected to commence by July 2026.
Economic Impact and Local Involvement
This ambitious project serves as a significant economic engine, greatly invigorating the industrial fabric of the Kingdom. Currently, approximately 150 companies are directly engaged in various phases of the construction of this infrastructure, about two-thirds of which are Moroccan. This substantial local involvement underscores a commitment to enhancing local expertise and promoting national industrial excellence, while simultaneously facilitating sustainable mobility and competitive transportation for the regions served.
