Amidst these pressing issues, an ambitious energy project named Sila Atlantik aims to connect Morocco and Germany through two subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. Stretching approximately 4,800 kilometers, this connection would be the longest intercontinental underwater power line globally. According to project developers, these cables could supply up to five percent of Germany's annual electricity demand, primarily sourced from solar and wind parks in Morocco, which are projected to have a theoretical maximum generation capacity of up to 15 gigawatts.
The estimated cost for the entire infrastructure, from generation facilities to the power connection to Germany, is around 30 billion USD (over 26 billion Euros). However, the realization of this project hinges on the involved parties reaching an agreement on financing, organizational structure, and necessary guarantees. These unresolved issues are currently significantly delaying the project's progress.
