The Crisis of French Schools in Morocco: A System in Turmoil

The Rising Concerns Surrounding French Education in Morocco

The French educational system in Morocco is facing significant criticism, particularly highlighted in the latest issue of the magazine "TelQuel." Parents of students attending French institutions, which fall under the purview of the French Ministry of Education, have expressed their discontent regarding rising tuition fees. Many feel exploited, likening their situation to being treated as "cash cows" by a system that seems increasingly out of touch with their financial realities. With an estimated 50,000 students enrolled in these French schools, the issue has garnered substantial attention and sparked widespread protests.

In the issue from April 3 to 9, 2026, "TelQuel" presents a cover story titled "A System in Turmoil," which captures the frustration of parents protesting against tuition increases and declining educational quality. An AI-generated image accompanying the article depicts a crowd of parents rallying outside a French school, holding placards that call for accountability regarding the management of their contributions, as families reportedly finance 60% of the educational system. This situation has escalated into an unprecedented mobilization, particularly in light of a tuition hike mandated by the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) in December 2025.

Financial Discrepancies and Parental Outrage

Parents are now required to pay a substantial initial enrollment fee, which can reach as high as 30,000 dirhams (approximately 2,756 euros), in addition to annual tuition fees. In late 2025, the AEFE announced a 4% increase in tuition fees and introduced a new annual registration fee of 4,000 dirhams (about 367 euros). According to "TelQuel," these combined measures represent a staggering 14% increase in overall costs for families each year. Parents are demanding transparency, especially after the AEFE reported a sudden surplus of 3 million euros just months after declaring a significant deficit. This abrupt financial turnaround has left many questioning the integrity of the AEFE's financial management, leading one parent to remark on the irony of being told of a financial crisis while the agency seemingly discovered 60 million euros hidden within its accounts shortly thereafter.

Currently, 44 institutions in Morocco are accredited by the French Ministry of National Education, with a majority of students being Moroccan or Franco-Moroccan. These schools serve as crucial pathways for the elite of Morocco, who are often educated in the French system before continuing their studies in France. This situation emphasizes the role that these French institutions play as conduits of influence from Paris within the Moroccan educational landscape.
