International Biennale of Casablanca Relocates to Essaouira
In a significant move, the 6th edition of the International Biennale of Casablanca will take place in Essaouira, running from December 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. This decision, announced by the organizing committee, comes as a response to the current international tensions and uncertainties, as well as a renewed focus on artists from the Middle East. The biennale, which has been a hallmark of cultural expression and artistic dialogue, aims to explore the theme "Creating the Impossible," utilizing various iconic venues in Essaouira, including some rarely accessible to the public. Notably, the event will also feature the Ifitry artist residency, where numerous invited artists have been developing their projects.
The temporary relocation does not diminish the biennale's historical ties to Casablanca; rather, it enhances the cultural landscape of Essaouira, which is currently experiencing a vibrant architectural and cultural revival. This is exemplified by the upcoming opening of the City of Arts and Culture, designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and overseen by architect Rachid Andaloussi. With an expected participation of over 80 Moroccan and international artists, the biennale will delve into themes of resilience, memory, ecology, and rebirth, under the curatorial vision of Marisa Caichiolo.
As the biennale evolves, it continues to create a platform for artistic exchange and community engagement, reaffirming its commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives and inspiring creativity. The previous edition of the biennale was held in 2022-2023, and this upcoming event promises to further enrich the cultural tapestry of Morocco.
