Three Drummondville Women Embark on a Trek in Morocco for Breast Cancer Fundraising
In a heartfelt initiative to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation, three women from Drummondville—Marie-Josée Ladry, Mélanie Laliberté, and Ariane Courcy—have decided to participate in a solidarity trek in Morocco. This decision came after a colleague received a cancer diagnosis in 2025, prompting the trio to take action. For over a year, they have been dedicated to their cause, working tirelessly to secure sponsors and organize various fundraising activities aimed at contributing the maximum possible to the foundation.
The culmination of their efforts will be a spaghetti dinner event scheduled for September 22 at the Claude-Nault Community Center, which has already reached full capacity with over 225 attendees. "This is a significant achievement for us," said Marie-Josée Ladry. "We are doing this to promote the foundation and share the valuable work it does, which includes research and offering support to those affected by cancer." Adding to this, Mélanie Laliberté described the event as a two-part evening—beginning with the dinner supported by local sponsors and followed by a dance party featuring an on-site alcohol sale. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Marie-Josée further emphasized the personal connection many have with breast cancer, stating, "One in eight women is affected by this disease. We all know someone, whether close or distant, who has been impacted by cancer. This reality resonates with us deeply. The more effort we put into prevention and research, the more lives we can help."
The Trek Experience
At the end of October, the three Drummondville women will participate in a fully female trek that involves various teams competing in pairs or trios. Being in the 'Open' category, they will need to walk between 15 to 20 kilometers each day while navigating using a compass and topographic maps. "The goal is to minimize the number of steps taken," explained Ms. Ladry. "This is not a speed trial." Their adventure consists of three days of trekking, culminating in a symbolic day dedicated to breast cancer awareness. "On this day, all teams will climb the highest dunes in the Merzouga region, wearing pink shirts to show our solidarity," Marie-Josée added. Following this enriching experience, the trio will return to Quebec, having made a significant contribution to a cause that touches many lives.
