Overview of Casablanca's Rail Enhancement Project
Casablanca is currently experiencing a significant transformation in its rail infrastructure, a year after King Mohammed VI inaugurated a comprehensive upgrade program on September 24, 2025. This ambitious initiative, which entails an investment of 20 billion dirhams, is part of Morocco's broader national rail transformation strategy aimed at 2030, which encompasses a total budget of 96 billion dirhams. The primary objective of this program is to enhance train services and streamline travel throughout Casablanca and its surrounding regions, making it more accessible and efficient for commuters.
Key Features of the Upgrade
The extensive rail upgrade encompasses the construction of three major new railway stations, the addition of ten new commuter stations, and the renovation of five existing stations. Furthermore, it includes the development of 260 kilometers of new railway lines, the establishment or expansion of 50 engineering structures, the creation of two technical centers, five maintenance facilities, and the procurement of 48 new trains dedicated to both commuter and regional services.
Currently, construction is progressing on the three principal stations: Casablanca-Sud, Mohammed V Airport, and the upcoming Hassan II Stadium station located in Benslimane. Each of these stations is projected to take approximately 24 months to complete and is on track to meet its timeline. Casablanca-Sud is poised to become a central hub featuring six platforms and ten tracks that will accommodate high-speed, conventional, regional, and commuter trains. This station will also provide direct connections to the tramway, bus, and taxi services, enhancing the overall transport network in the city.
The Mohammed V Airport station will serve as a vital link connecting the airport directly to Greater Casablanca’s rail system, equipped with four platforms and seven tracks that will cater to conventional, high-speed, and Aerexpress services. A separate entrance on the city side will facilitate access towards Nouaceur. In addition, the Benslimane station is strategically positioned to support the Hassan II Stadium, especially during the anticipated 2030 World Cup, featuring two platforms and four tracks specifically for high-speed trains during major events, supplemented by five platforms and six tracks dedicated to commuter services.
Moreover, construction has commenced on ten new commuter stations scattered across Greater Casablanca, including locations such as Mohammedia Colleges, Zenata, Sidi Bernoussi, Ain Sebaa, Hay Mohammadi, Mers Sultan, Casablanca Oasis, Sidi Maarouf, and Nouaceur. Each of these stations will follow a standardized design that prioritizes clear passenger routes, efficient ticketing and waiting areas, as well as the essential technical and safety systems necessary for seamless operation.
