Transparency Maroc Raises Concerns Over Government Spending
The Moroccan Association for Fighting Corruption, known as Transparency Maroc, has formally reached out to the Minister Delegate in charge of Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, seeking clarification on the allocation and utilization of a substantial sum of 280 billion dirhams intended to support purchasing power over the past five years. The association’s inquiry comes in response to recent statements made by the minister, who indicated that the government had indeed spent this significant amount for the purpose of enhancing citizens' purchasing power, yet it appeared to have minimal impact on the economy.
In its correspondence, Transparency Maroc emphasized its commitment to transparency and the protection of public funds, urging the government to provide the public with detailed explanations regarding the management of these funds. The organization posed several critical questions concerning the actual disbursement of these funds over the last five years, including the specific amounts allocated, the sectors that benefited, and whether there are mechanisms in place to track the effects of this financial support on the prices of subsidized goods. Furthermore, they inquired about the evaluation outcomes related to this spending.
Additionally, the association extended its questions to include support directed towards commodities not subject to price regulations. They urged the government to disclose the obligations imposed on beneficiaries regarding selling prices and whether these obligations allow the government to reclaim funds if not adhered to.
